Not the best citation I ever found, but this is from Wiki and was quick and easy to dig up. Again, I never said that you can't learn after 6 (your brain keeps growing until mid 20s), it is just easier before then.

I also want to point out that my "developmentally appropriate" comment was geared towards earlier posts in which people pointed out items they felt were "totally developmentally inappropriate" with very little basis on their behalf.

You're describing the Montessori approach. It's been scientifically proven to be successful - it's just that after over 100 years, very few seem to have caught on. There is no ridiculous testing, high pressure, or homework, yet everyone (for the most part) achieves.

Personally, I am of the “leave me the hell alone” mentality when it comes to government and do not want anyone mandating me do anything – especially when it comes to my children and their education.

Who are you people to say what is “developmentally appropriate”. I have a masters in primary education (ages 3-6), and in school I was taught that at about the age of four-and-a-half, children have an “explosion” in reading and writing.

“There is absolutely no research showing that children who read at age 4 or 5 do better at age 10 or 12 than children who start reading in first grade,” she says. “But there is research showing if you push 4- and 5-year-olds too hard, it backfires."
